"When is the DVD FINALLY going to be ready!?"
At long last, our guitar DVD is READY TO SHIP!

"What's on the DVD?"

We didn't want to leave anyone in the dark, so the DVD contains 2 1/2 hours of lessons, including a chapter with the very basics for those of you who needed a review of the basic theory and to learn the notes of the neck. It then moves on into understanding the scale shapes and visualizing them and how they connect all across the neck.

In the following chapters, the DVD lessons cover applying the ideas in a practical way, with examples taken from the "Master the Fretboard" text, with a close look at some of the solos that really exemplify the concepts presented. Scales, sequences, arpeggios, fretboard visualization, how to build solos based on the underlying chords - LOADS of cool lessons, always with practical and useful examples.

Also included is a chapter on guitar setup, giving you a close look at how to properly string the guitar, adjust the neck, adjust the action, and properly intonate the guitar.

Here's the youtube trailer, to give you an idea of the style of the DVD. We cut this together quick for the release - when we overhaul www.joedocmusic.com this summer, we'll have a media gallery/lessons blog that's very up-to-date, and we'll be adding more lessons every month. Thanks for hanging in there - this took a lot longer than I ever expected!!.

What's the difference between "Master the Fretboard" and "The Chord and Harmony Guide"? Can I see a sample?
Sure - samples are at the right in the media gallery.
Here's the lowdown on the two methods:

- "Master the Fretboard is an overall course on learning the patterns of the guitar neck, and learning to interconnect them for a 'whole view' of the guitar. It focuses on solo playing, and includes technique and ideas. There are lots of updates, which get into specific styles. In an entry above, you can grab a sample chapter of "MTF" (we always make one update chapter available as a sample).

- "The Chord and Harmony Guide" is a comprehensive look at harmony on the guitar. It is NOT a typical 'chord book' with list after list of the same damned chords just off of every note! Instead, you'll learn how to figure out all those chords easily, and best of really know how to apply the chords. That's the aspect missing from standard guides, and what makes ours stand out.

Page through the media gallery for a few samples.

I've been playing the same pentatonic licks forever. Is your method just more of that, or what do you have? I am not a beginner, and don't want that Jamorama kind of stuff.

Is the guitar method just theoretical, or do you provide examples?

So what kinda hot s#^t you got? I want some new licks, tired of the old ones. Hook me up!
(Typical questions we get through ebay all the time.)
If you are looking for some blues, country or shred ideas - we've got 'em all covered. "Master the Fretboard" is not just for beginners, but sort of 'rethinks' guitar playing from the ground up. We've had experienced players say that they learned a lot from the 'beginning' chapters - things they overlooked, or always visualized differently.

Along with the 'clearing up theory' aspect of "Master the Fretboard" there are additional lessons based around hot country licks, shred solos (fast runs, arpeggios, etc), and creating blues licks that really fit the changes, not just noodling along in one pentatonic shape.

Browse through the media gallery, and you can check out some examples with tabs and audio.

If you like the lessons - buy me a beer! :-)

Can you please help me learn a few basics, as well as learn to read tablature?
No problem! This is one of the first entries in our new guitar Q&A page, and it is for beginners. If you feel confident in reading the tabs and diagrams after this, you will be ready to start in on our Chord & Harmony Guide, or 'Master the Guitar Fretboard' (meant for learning lead guitar).
By clicking on the media gallery at the right, you'll begin going through the first basic steps of learning guitar. Before you start:

- Be sure you know how to tune the guitar

- Tune your guitar!

You will see an image in the window. Below it is text explaining what you need to learn. Use the 'prev' and 'next' buttons to scroll through the lesson. See you back at the Q&A in a few...

If you like this, Buy me a coffee and I'll stay caffinated enough to post some more beginner's stuff for you! ;o)

A quick question. Are you familiar with all 4ths tuning? Link to Wikipedia article I was just curious about it and what your personal opinion was of this tuning. I guess I'm mostly trying to learn rock and blues and this may not apply too much but I thought I would ask. Just recently started using D tuning for Bridge of Sighs (Trower) and found it to be very easy to do bends and stuff. In the process I ran across this 4th tuning and thought I would ask. If the answer is long and drawn out and you don't have time to respond I understand, I'll just keep researching. Just sort of sounded cool and maybe beneficial. Thanks Joe, rlj
Hi rjl, I am not familiar with it, although I assume that it applies to modern jazz much more than rock/blues. The 'standard' tuning of the guitar (as you may know) includes P4ths with the exception of the G- to B- string jump of a Maj 3rd, which allows for a two octave spread over the open strings. The standard tuning has created many playing conventions which are the typical in blues and rock phrasing, so a new tuning requires some rethinking! However, having the orderly leap of a P4th allows the transposing of phrases to other keys very easily. If you're into jazz theory, you'll know why this interval is very important... Sounds like a great thing to try out on a rainy day! cheers joe dochtermann
